As announced in our previous Research Blog post, project researchers at the Centre for Education Policy and Equalising Opportunities (CEPEO) at UCL have been working on the Outreach Metric methodology having consulted with the Project Steering Group. As with all outreach participation data analysis, understanding the context is crucial. That’s why we need your help.
As part of the investigation, and to help with the planned data analysis in the Safe Researcher Setting, we are keen to gather useful contextual data on the extent to which students’ self–select for specific activities (pre and post 16) and have designed a survey for all Database Point of Contacts.
We know that understanding any rules of engagement are part of an important back story to this project and urge you to share your approach(s) through this survey. Your responses may also have a wider utility for other HEAT analyses.

Survey trialled by the HEAT Research Group | During June 2025 |
Feedback incorporated and survey circulated to Database Point of Contacts in wider membership | July 2025 |
Survey closes, responses reported to Outreach Metric Project research team at UCL | August 2025 |
We are aware that the summer is a busy time; pending feedback from the trial, we aim to circulate the survey by direct email in the early July, and will close at the beginning of August.
To understand the full context in which you deliver and engage in your important work, we kindly ask all Database Point of Contacts to allocate some of their precious time to responding to the survey. It should take 10-15 minutes, but you will have until the end of July to submit a response.
We are asking for one response per member organisation, but where you have a sub user group/collegiate who has a significantly different approach, we will ask you to send to a colleague so that their approach is also reflected in the survey.
We are hugely grateful if you can find the time to pop something in your July calendar for this survey, having been successful in obtaining funds for this project we are keen to make it value for money and provide useful intelligence both for an Outreach Metric methodology and for outreach data analysis in general.
Keep an eye on your inbox and this space — we’ll be sharing the link and full details very soon!
On a related note: we are finalising the data request for the Department for Education to link our outreach data as part of this project and will keep you updated once it has been submitted, with further details on the cohort and the scope of the linking.
