As part of the HEAT Service, member organisations have access to data and tools which will help target their outreach delivery to those learners who need it most.
School and Further Education College Targeting and Profiling
HEAT’s Institution Profiles provides datasets and profiles of Schools and FE Colleges in England to help users identify institutions attended by target groups of learners. HEAT access data from the Department of Education’s National Pupil Database (NPD) and the Individualised Learner Record (ILR) to show the proportion of pupils attending each school or college who live in disadvantaged areas.
These data is linked with other publicly available data for schools, such as demographic profiles, Key Stage 4 and 5 exam profiles and post-18 destination data to build up a rich picture of the pupils attending each school and FE College in England.
HEAT also offer data for schools in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland where that data are available.
School and Further Education College Outreach Coverage
With the majority of large Outreach Providers now using the HEAT system to record data on their outreach delivery, we are in a unique position to examine Outreach Coverage nationally. We work with the regional Tracking Services to collate data on all outreach delivered in England and create a dataset providing details of outreach activities delivered per School or Further Education College in England.

Student Targeting and Profiling
HEAT’s Postcode Profiler provides a detailed analysis of postcodes, including multiple measures of social disadvantage, to assist with targeting and planning. Users upload a list of postcodes to quickly view information on the way that postcode has been classified according to postcode proxies frequently used in the targeting of outreach.
HEAT’s Student Profiler report allows users to upload a list of students to match with student records across all HEAT member organisations. The dataset generated provides information on all other outreach activities in which those students have participated.
Evaluation Planning
HEAT’s Evaluation Plans Tool enables users to plan the evaluation for an activity or programme, laying the groundwork for quality evaluation. Users create a Theory of Change to help set out the intended outcomes and impact of their activity, as well as choosing how they are going to measure those outcomes and impacts to ensure there is a focus on measurable outcomes.
Evaluation plans are integrated into the system allowing users to store plans alongside ‘live’ monitoring and evaluation data.
